Humans didn’t evolve to be maximally happy: we evolved pain and suffering, as signals to avoid or change certain situations. Humans also didn’t evolve for the modern world of smartphones, 9-5 jobs and education systems which demand sitting still for hours on end. Insights from evolutionary theory as to why mental-disorder related traits are such common parts of the human experience offer a reframing of symptomology, connecting us with the struggles of humanity over hundreds of thousands of years. This workshop shall introduce attendees to general evolutionary principles for explaining mental health problems, discuss specific symptoms and traits and their evolutionary explanation, and encourage consideration of where evolutionary explanations could provide relief by enhancing understanding and acceptance.
